Review

Alice: Madness Returns is an action-adventure game developed by Spicy Horse Games Studios and published by Electronic Arts. It is the sequel to the first title of the saga, American McGee's Alice. You can play it on your PC or your Mac, and also on your PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Even though it has been classified as an action adventure videogame, it can be considered part of other genres such as psychological horror, horror survival and platforming, too.

Once you download it, you will see that the storyline is set after the events of the first release. Our protagonist and main character, Alice Liddell has spent the last few years locked up in the Rutledge Asylum, and now she has been released. Nowadays, she lives under the care of Dr. Angus Bumby, her psychiatrist in the Victorian London. The harrowing memories about the fire that took her father, mother and sister's lives are still haunting Alice. Dr. Angus uses hypnotism to force her to forget about those memories, but the hallucinations about Wonderland do not cease.

One day, a hallucination is so strong that she believes herself in Wonderland again, and she meets the Cheshire cat. He tells Alice about an external force that is causing her madness, and sends her to search this menace. The rest of the game, you will control Alice in her quest, and your adventure will take place in Wonderland, but also in the real life during some brief periods of sanity.

We're all mad here

As mentioned, the gameplay of Alice: Madness Returns has platforming features. Thus, Alice will be able to perform triple jumps and float to reach platforms over long distances. She will be able to ride bursts of steam, too, so she will be lifted upwards. You will have to solve several puzzles concerning to platforms, switches, doors, etc. to complete some levels. You will need to use your weapons or items to solve some of the puzzles. Alice will also have the power of Shrink Sense, this way she can shrink at will and explore hidden locations, and also discover some objects or messages that would otherwise be out of sight.
